What to do when you're in a car accident.

Car accidents, even the small ones can be a traumatic event. There is no doubt that you will feel scared, jittery or frustrated. You may not be focused on what just happened. Unless you or any others involved in the accident needs immediate medical attention whereas you should dial 911, you will need to work through the fear and compose yourself. What you do at the scene of the accident can play a big role in the resolution of the case.

Here is a list of things to do when in a car accident:

· Stop the vehicle. Leaving a scene of an accident whether it’s your fault or not, could have you charged with hit and run.
· Avoid too much conversation about the accident. Do not admit to any fault or liability. You want to discuss details with the police or your insurance agent only.
· You may not have a camera on hand but if you’ve got a cell phone with a camera, take pictures of the vehicles involved, the location and any debris surrounding the accident. Take pictures of any other damages on the other vehicle that could not have happened in this accident.
· Gather as much information as possible. You’ll want to make sure you’ve got the names, addresses and phone number of the driver and all passengers. Get a description of the other vehicle involved. Don’t forget the other driver’s license plate and insurance information. It may also be wise to get any witnesses information, collect the date and time of the accident and also record the location.
· Cooperate completely with the police. You never want to argue and lose your temper with the police or with the other party involved. Doing so may result in you looking guilty.
· As soon as possible, contact your insurance company and file a report with them.

It’s important to know what to do when you’re in an accident before it happens, so keep your checklist and review it from time to time.
